Our Lady of the Assumption Chapel in Sopot

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sopot, formerly known as the "Polish Chapel", is a Neo-Gothic, brick church built between 1869 and 1870 on the initiative of local Catholics. Its construction was made possible thanks to the free work of local Kashubians. It was consecrated on August 14, 1870, and given the invocation of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Before World War II, the chapel was a meeting place for both Polish and German Catholics. The interior of the chapel houses two valuable artifacts: a wooden sculpture of the Crucified Christ from the late 15th century and a figure of the Mother of God from the early 16th century, giving the interior a unique, historical character. The chapel served mainly the Kashubians, and in the summer season it was also visited by Polish vacationers. In 1902, a larger church dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea was opened in Sopot, which made the chapel a more intimate place.
